"To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about, God in His mercy
Oh, if he really does exist
Why did he desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally"
- Gilbert O'Sullivan
This is part of a song by Gilbert O'Sullivan called "Naturally Alone". This part of the song reflects on when Jane and Rochester did not get married. The beginning of the song excerpt is thinking about how happy Jane was the day before the news about Rochester's other wife. The theme of this song is sad. It's saying that whoever this song is about is forever alone. They might think they are about to be happy, but an impediment will always happen and they will end up alone, like Jane. "Reality came around" is the part of the song that Jane finds out the reality of Bertha Mason, Rochester's other wife. It left Jane heart broken.
This song really relates! As soon as i started reading the song, I knew what part of the book it connected to. The tone of the song really captures how Jane felt, even down to her feelings towards God.
