Connections - Love

"...a brainless and vicious youth whom I had sometimes met in society, and had never thought of hating because I despised him so absolutely. On recognizing him; because at the same moment my love for Celine sank under an extinguisher. A women who could betray me for such a rival was not worth contending for: she deserved only scorn; less, however, then I, who had been her dupe"(146).

Mr. Rochester is explaining how he met Adele's mother and how he thought they were in love, but one day he found her with one of his rivals. I think this quote connects to today because men today still do the same thing. I think that if a man found his love with one of his rivals he would react the somewhat the same way. Rochester saying that his "love for Celine sank under an extinguisher" is what I would think would happen today. If you see someone you love cheating on you, you either loose all respect for them, or make and excuse for them and continue to be with them. In this case, Rochester lost respect for Celine. At the end of the quote above, Rochester refers to himself as a dupe. Dupe means various things, but in this quote I believe that dupe means a victim of deception. Rochester thinks of himself as a fool for getting tricked. I think that that applies to today as well because when people get cheated on today they often blame themseleves and think they are a fool for believing it.

Also later in the story that Rochester is telling Jane, he said that the man and Celine did not beat this to him lightly. Rochester stated " Neither of them possessed energy or wit to belabour me soundly; but they insulted me as coarsely as they could in their little way: Especially Celine; who was even waxed rather brilliant on my personal defects-deformities she termed them"(147). Celine not only broke Rochesters heart, but while she was at it she pointed out Mr. Rochesters flaws. I think that happens today too when the dupe doesn't just forgive the other, it is a defense mechanism. This whole situation is something I can picture happening today and turning out kinda like it did in the book.
