Connections - Anne Elliott

"...I might accompny him - not as his wife: I shall tell him"(412).

In this quote Jane was just asked by her new found cousin to be his wife and go with him to be a missionary in a different country. Jane refused him. Just like Anne Elliott from Persuasion refused the marriage of her cousin. Women refusing a marriage of a wealthier man was rare when these books were written. Both Jane and Anne were strong women, able to take care of themselves. They both were found of the idea of breaking the rules of the social class and marrying who they wanted. Anne Eliott and Jane Eyre are both women who were ready for a new gender relationship.

  1. Great connection here! I would have never thought of that. I completely agree though, Jane is just like Anne. She did not want to marry just because it would better her circumstances. She knew she should only marry for love, and refused to make a logical choice. Because love is more important <3 <3 <3 hahahah
